Taro farms in Hanalei capture a classic scene from old Kaua’i. Born and raised on the north shore of the island in the sleepy country town of Hanalei, Pastor Alex is a second generation taro farmer who enjoys the labor intensive work of a farmer. In his twenties, Alex served in the U.S. Marine Corps (1987–1991). While stationed in New Orleans, Louisiana, Alex met his lovely wife, Sandy, and married her in 1991. After moving back to Kaua’i to continue the family business of taro farming, they eventually began attending Calvary Chapel Kauai (renamed as Crossroads Christian Fellowship). Watching the godly example that Sandy exhibited inspired Alex to accept Jesus as his Lord and Savior at an Easter Sonrise service about 13 years ago.
Together, Pastor Alex and Sandy have faithfully served the body of Christ through various ministries at church. Pastor Alex has overseen the Usher ministry, served as deacon, and continues to serve on the Board of Directors. In 2013, Pastor Alex was ordained as a church elder. Pastor Alex and Sandy have led many small group studies over the years and feel inspired by the Lord to offer studies centered around couples. They are currently partnering with another couple who leads the Love and Respect video series.
Kaua’i offers many outdoor activities to those who live here. Alex enjoys hiking the many trails that dot the island. He is an avid runner and has participated in some of the local marathons and half marathons that are held in the state. He also likes to play golf; though he may consistently shoot over a hundred, those occasional birdies keeps bringing him back to play more!
